About the Great Drives TV SeriesThe producers of the PBS series GREAT CARS are announcing our new companion series – the logical next step, a way to put those great cars on the road. It’s time to buckle up for Great Drives – a dazzling new automotive adventure series that puts viewers in the driver’s seat for the ultimate road trips. Propelled by the lure of discovery and the freedom of the open road, we’ll show viewers the joys of quick escapes, weekend getaways and the trips of a lifetime – all filled with fascinating detours and soaked in history.Breathtaking panoramas will unfold through the window of our great cars as the highways stretch out before us. We’ll roam through places like the majestic Grand Tetons and Yellowstone Park, encounter the blue water splendor of Hana, Maui, explore Florida’s mysteries along the Keys, then head up the coast to St. Augustine, America’s oldest city, we’ll get our kicks on Route 66, go searching for King Arthur and explore the Scottish Highlands. Everywhere we go we’ll pick up unique recommendations for lodging, restaurants and places not to miss. We’ll go wherever our imagination leads and behold wondrous vistas along the way. In future seasons we’ll take this show on the road – and roam the famous by-ways of England, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Alaska and beyond. Monet’s gardens at Giverny, the Chateaux of the Loire Valley, and the French Riviera will reveal their secrets as we share the places we love most. Great Drives offers relief from the monotony of the daily commute and show people that driving is more than a chore – it can be the ticket to adventure and romance. It’s about enjoying the ride. We’ll rekindle America’s love affair with the automobile while we provide people with a chance to rediscover a great American pastime – the road trip. Great Drives – the name says it all. There are millions of miles of highway and countless numbers of experiences – all you have to do is turn the key and go. Viewers will be entertained and informed as they’re inspired to get out on the road. We invite you come along. Great Drives Episode Descriptions#101 – Dinosaurs:We’ll track down the largest beasts ever to tread on the earth, over 100 million years ago – the Stegosaurus, the Velociraptor, the Brontosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus Rex. We’ll start with a drive to Glenrock, Wyoming for a hands-on dig with one of the world’s most famous paleontologists, Dr. Robert Bakker. After several days of discovering triceratops bones, fossil fish and more we’ll follow Dr. Bakker down to Medicine Bow. Then it’s out to Como Bluff the site of the world’s first major discovery of dinosaur bones. This is the perfect drive for anyone with an interest in the deep past. But we recommend that you “bone” up before embarking. We discover wildlife refuges, take a tour behind the scenes at Cape Canaveral, walk the beach where the first land speed records were set (the birthplace of speed --where racing started before NASCAR), mingle with the Harley riders at Daytona’s annual Bike Week, and wander through the historic streets of St. Augustine.
